Being a support act for the GO-GP.ORG A1GP at Kyalami was a great boost for the Investchem Formula Ford series as two superb races showed just how close and exciting this form of racing can be.

Mathew Merton in the Matsam Supplies Mygale won both races at Killarney last month and holds a healthy championship lead, but knows that each race is hard and anything can happen. “I’ve had lots of bad luck in the past, but so far this year I haven’t had a problem.”

Runner-up in last year’s title fight, Nicholas van Weely is determined to win even though he runs his self prepared car on a tiny budget. The Magnificent Paints & Hardware backed Van Diemen is always spectacular to watch and he could take the win.

Pretoria based Werner Scholtz scored his first win last year and is one of the championship favourites even though he didn’t have a happy time in the Chemical Logistics Mygale at Killarney.

David Veringa (Bravo Holdings Mygale) is a former race winner who returned to the series last year after a two-year layoff and went well at Zwartkops last year.

Determined 20-year-old Dean Hirschowitz (Nightsbridge Mygale) had a stunning outing in round one where he was second overall for the day and although he hasn’t done much racing he is one of the most dedicated drivers around at the moment. He learns fast, very fast.

Another young driver to keep an eye on is 15-year-old James Temple in the Tiger Wheel & Tyre Mygale. He came straight out of karts at the end of last season and took a solid third place at the final race of the year.

Another driver who will be watched with great interest is former Group N class champion Grant Wentzel (Ultimate Driving experience.co.za/Team SportStar Van Diemen) who makes his return to the sport after a decade away from the track.

The likes of Gordon Walker (Quality Living Space Van Diemen) and Richard Bonneschen (Anglo Rand Van Diemen) are enthusiastic competitors who get quicker with each race.

The Zetec Challenge class for older cars on harder compound tyres should be a fight between Allen Meyer (Les Donnees Mygale) and Paul Schultz (Knottsberry Foods Mygale) who had his car set up by former champion Jayde Kruger.

Also in with a shout are Andreas Petrou (Chemical Logistics Mygale) is always a threat and Ian Schofield (Investchem Mygale) who has gone well despite having had over a year off  due to business commitments.

Other drivers to watch in this battle are Barry Harrison (Bravo Holdings Mygale),  former VW Polo Cup racer Tony Mellows (Bison Lubricants/E-Car Van Diemen) and the ever enthusiastic Tony Sack (Investchem/Sissyboy Mygale).

Wheel to wheel action is the best way to describe Formula Ford and fans can expect close racing in each of the races.
