Pro-Tour Thrills

Pro Tour  Round 2  - Zwartkops

Round two of the popular Pro-Tour national championship roadshow took place at Zwartkops and provided an enthusiastic crowd with non-stop action.

The opening Shelby Can-Am race was won by former champion Darryn Lobb in the DK Woodcraft backed car. From pole position he was in command from the start and after 12-laps took the flag 2 ½ seconds clear of Rui Campos in the Hugo Boss backed version who had Brian Algar (Thuthuka Welding) hot on his heels

A few seconds adrift was Alan Eve (Phakisa) with Bertil Hoffman (IOU Music) and Thomas Reib (Intertrans Oil) completing the top six.

Thomas Reib leads

Reib took full advantage of the partially inverted grid for race two and led from the start until mid distance when Eve took over for a lap before running off the circuit which allowed Reib back into the lead which he held until the end.

Another steady drive from Algar resulted in second place ahead of Lobb who lost his nose in a skirmish with Eve at the top of the hill which resulted in Eve retiring. That left Craig Shorter (Execuline) to take fourth ahead of Hoffman and Campos, the latter having damaged rear bodywork after being assaulted by a spinning Dave Beattie (Dura) early in the race.

Two wins for Nicholas van Weely

After qualifying on pole position Nicholas van Weely stylishly won both Investchem Formula Ford events in the Magnificent Paints Van Diemen. Each time he was well clear of championship leader Mathew Merton (Matsam Mygale) who fought hard with Wesleigh Orr (Teague Distributors Mygale) in the opening race. It was Orr’s first Formula Ford race and he admitted it was not easy.

Merton hesitated at the start and was behind Orr for the first few laps. Once ahead he managed to break away but couldn’t do anything about van Weely who won with a six-second advantage.

Orr’s third place came under threat from James Temple (KMT Mygale) who finished ahead of Werner Scholtz (Investchem Mygale), but Temple was deemed to have jumped the start which gave fourth place to Scholtz as Gerard Peters (Petro-Oil Zim Mygale) and Dean Hirschowitz (Knightsbridge Investments Mygale) completed the top six.

After a first lap tangle eliminated Ian Schofield (Chemical Logistics Mygale) and delayed Paul Schultz, the Zetec Challenge class win went to Allen Meyer (Supa Quick Birchleigh Mygale) from Andreas Petrou (Investchem Mygale) and Tony Mellows (Bison Lubricants Van Diemen).

Van Weely made a good start in race two and was never headed as Merton once again was second. Orr and Temple fought a good scrap with Temple snatching third on lap four. Orr then went off at the hairpin and lost his nose but eventually rejoined, but was out the points.

Despite an opening lap spin Scholtz was fourth ahead of Zetec Challenge winner Schofield after Peters and Hirschowitz tried to share the same piece of tar at turn eight and both spun but they recovered to claim sixth and seventh.

Gavin Lightfoot Dominated

The Red Square Kawasaki ZX10R Masters Cup saw local ace Gavin Lightfoot (Execuline) dominate proceedings, winning each race comfortably after starting from pole position.

In each race he was followed home by Capetonian Danie Maritz aboard the Wickon Racing machine.

Joe Shearer (O’Mage) was third in the opening race after a tough scrap with Pieter de Vos (Essential Hardware). Sergio da Silva (Trojan Panelbeaters) held off Royden Bennett (CJ Auto) to take fifth place.

Race two was restarted after a multiple bike first lap crash and it was de Vos who came home in third place after a tough fight with Shearer. East London rider Jayson Lamb (Hi-Q/Buffalo Motorcycles) was fifth, one second clear of da Silva.

Round three of the Pro-Tour takes place at Kyalami on 30th May
