Altech
GT Challenge Double Take
|
| |
With some subliminal consistency and
brutal pace from his Porsche GT2R Toby Venter
impressed all at Zwartkops on Saturday 18 April and
blasted his way to a pair of Altech GT Challenge
Class A victories. Venter's pair in round 2 of the
National Pro Tour Series now makes it four wins from
four events and firmly places him as the favourite
for overall Altech GT Challenge championship
honours.
Venter was in a league of his own, returning a
fastest lap time of 1:01.256, and it looks likely in
the near future that he'll become the first Altech
GT Challenge car to step onto hallowed ground of a
sub 1 minute Zwartkops lap. |

Oliver Dalais's Porsche 917 replica
appeared to have the pace but technical gremlins
plagued the team all weekend and he failed to
finish. Charl Joubert's turbocharged Lotus Elise got
closest to Venter and thanks to a spectacular flame
throwing display had the crowd on their feet lap
after lap. Race 1 saw Joubert come home second on
track and therefore second in Class A. Traditionally
Altech GT Challenge combines its second heat with
the Shelby Can Am field but organisers thankfully
decided that the quality Altech GT Challenge field
warrants its own track space. Race 2 looked likely
to end up the same way as the first with Joubert
following Venter home but the giant killing Lotus
retired on lap six.
Altech GT Challenge Class B was dominated by a host
of awesome sounding Ferraris. Sharl Parsad drove his
430 version to third overall in Race 1 to take the
first Class B win. He was shadowed closely by 360
mounted Jeremy Pougnet and Andrew Miller. Parsad
came out of the Race 2 blocks a touch slowly and
afforded Pougnet the lead. Pougnet led the way but a
spirited drive saw Parsad climb the ranks up to
second with a handful of laps to go.
Not content with second Parsad kept charging and the
pressure paid off as Pougnet fluffed the final
corner and spun. Parsad scooped the win, Pougnet
recovered to hold second and Miller completed the
podium. |

Rod Cole-Edwardes and Barry Nel
tussled for the Altech GT Challenge Class C honours.
Cole-Edwardes drove his rear engine 911 RSR to a
double class victory while 944 Cup driver Nel, who
finished second in the first heat, failed to
complete the second. Nicky Dicks powered his Porsche
GT3 Cup to third in Race 1 and inherited second
place in Race 2.
Jonathan du Toit and Porsche 911 RSR mounted Dave
Fourie shared Class D victories but it was Du Toit's
grumbling Daytona Cobra that took the overall win on
combined race time. Anthony Blunden was consistent
and brought his Porsche 911 RSR third for the day. |

The Altech Porsche Club 924 Challenge
handicap was a nail bitter. With the slowest cars
setting off first and the faster cars chasing it all
came down to the final few turns and every square
inch of tarmac appeared to be covered in Porsches.
Paul Moss scored the Race 1 win from Colin Maine and
Martin Liebenberg. Race 2 saw Melt Malan take the
chequered flag first while Moss continued his form
coming in second just ahead of Robert Scott.
Moss recorder his first overall victory in the
series which bodes well for the future and his 2009
aspirations.
Round 3 of the Altech GT Challenge and Altech
Porsche Club 924 Challenge takes place at Kyalami on
30 May 2009. For more information visit
