Altech
GT Lap Records Up for Grabs
|
| |
With the infamous
Bustop now a thing of the past it is guaranteed that
the Altech GT Challenge lap records will tumble as
round 3 of the national Pro Tour blasts Kyalami on
Saturday 30 May. A narrowing right hander replaces
the slow chicane and testing has shown that most
competitors will improve on their 2008 lap time by
around 3 seconds. Action will be heated as the 34
drivers fight for the win and the glory of seeing a
Kyalami lap record next to their name.
As has been the case all year Toby Venter is
expected to lead the high-paced Altech GT Challenge
from the front in his Class A Porsche GT2. Venter is
in line to be the nations quickest tin top racer
around Kyalami, with only the WesBank V8s offering
any competition, so it'll be worth watching the
clocks when he circulates the new layout.
Ferrari or Porsche? Choose your brand for Class B
because it can go either way. Ferrari 360 Challenge
ace Jeremy Pougnet leads the points table going into
the event. Christo Lindeque follows in a Ferrari 430
and Andrew Miller is third in a Ferrari 360. The
Porsche challenge should come from the likes of
Markus Minihold. Despite only sitting toward the
bottom of the championship table Sharl Parsad's
Ferrari F430
is one to watch.
Class C and D sees the duel between the front and
rear engine Porsche brigade. Rod Cole-Edwardes leads
the Class C way in his 993 RSR while Nicky Dicks and
Barry Nel following a 996 GT3 Cup and front engine
944 Turbo Cup respectively. Long time racer John
Greve will fly the historic flag high, and show that
old Porsches still go, in his magenta 911 RSR. An
interesting Class C entry, depending on whether the
team can get the car prepared in time, could be the
Ferrari 355 of Mark Gold. If Gold makes the Altech
GT Challenge race at Kyalami it will mean three
successive generations of Ferrari on track at the
same time. The Class D points standing sees Charl
Arangies' 944 Turbo the filling in the Anthony
Blunden and Dave Fourie sandwich.
Altech GT Challenge Class E continues to grow and
sees Justin Robertson and Ron Harmse debuting in the
class. Pierre Martins currently leads the way in his
wide bodied Porsche 928 but Dillon Miller's Porsche
911 RS is in firing distance. The overall Altech GT
Challenge points table turns in a surprise with the
fastest man, Toby Venter, narrowly leading Class E
man Pierre Martins. Jeremy Pougnet, the first
Ferrari pilot, sits third on the table.
Run on a handicap, where the slowest car starts
first, the Altech Porsche Club 924 Championship will
be a thriller on the revised Kyalami track. Expect a
jam packed final few laps and a number of
disqualifications for breaking nominated times. A
number of new competitors have joined the fray and
picking a winner is even more of a guess than
before. Marius Wait goes to Kyalami at the front of
the Altech Porsche Club 924 but Robert Scott and
Braam van Niekerk are snapping at his bumper.
