The last time the Investchem Formula Ford series raced at Kyalami it was as a support act to the A1GP event in front of a huge crowd that was treated to two nail biting races and fans went away impressed with the closeness of competition.

The track has undergone some changes since then and the notorious chicane has, at last, been consigned to history.

Leading the championship is Boksburg’s Mathew Merton in the Brian Kruger prepared Matsam Supplies Mygale. He won the season opening race at Cape Town in dominant style as his main rival Nicholas van Wheely had a torrid time. A solid result at Zwartkops kept his lead secure and he’s looking forward to Kyalami. “I used to battle at this track, but I’ve got over that and two more wins would be very handy.”

Van Wheely (Magnificent Paints Van Diemen) dominated proceedings at the last round (Zwartkops) and knows how vitally important it is to repeat the feat at Kyalami. “This year there’s only eight rounds in the championship so each race counts a lot more in the overall picture and a bad result, like I had in Cape Town, is so much harder to overcome.”

Pretoria based Werner Scholtz joined the Chemical Logistics team this season, but has had a tough start to his season. He did win a race last year while aboard a Van Diemen and has admitted the Mygale is quite different. His goal at Kyalami is to take a win.

A young driver starting out in his circuit racing career is 15-year-old James Temple. He already has a third place behind his name and has surprised a lot of the established runners with his pace. Another new face is that of Dean Hirschowitz in the Nightsbridge supported Mygale who has got better with each outing and is looking forward to a circuit he has already raced at.

Former saloon car champion Grant Wentzel (Ultimate Driving Experience.co.za/Team SportStar Van Diemen) makes his return to the sport after a decade away from the track and his progress will be watched with great interest.

A championship within a championship is the Zetec Challenge for older cars which use harder compound semi-slick Avon tyres.

The fight here is between Allen Meyer in the Les Donnees Mygale, the current champion, and British Formula Ford legend Rick Morris (Investchem Mygale) who won it the previous season.

The joker in the pack could be Paul Schultz (Knottsberry Foods Mygale) who is capable of harassing the so-called established stars. Barry Harrison (Bravo Holdings Mygale) has also come on strong lately and his confidence has grown with some good results behind him.

After a long layoff, Ian Schofield (Investchem Mygale) returned with a good turn of speed and he will also in the hunt for a win. Adreas Petrou (Chemical Logistics Mygale) and Tony Mellows (Bison Lubricants Van Diemen) are steady performers while Tony Sack in the Sissy Boy Mygale and Pieter Lotriet return to the Midrand Grand Prix venue looking for a good result. Richard Bonnischen (Anglo Rand Van Diemen) is an enthusiastic competitors who get quicker with each race.

Formula Ford has a reputation for producing good racing and Saturday’s races are bound to be full of action.
