PRESS RELEASE: JUNE 2000 |
|
|
|

Phakisa
Pandemonium
|
| |
Saturday 20 June will
see the Goldwagen Challenge brigade head to the
dusty plains of the Phakisa Freeway in Welkom. The
fourth round of the 2009 Pro Tour Road Show will
make its first appearance of the year in this small
Free State town.
The Goldwagen Challenge should once again field the
largest entry of all of the participating formulas
with more than forty entries expected. Spectacular
and extremely competitive racing was witnessed at
this venue last year and one can expect very much of
the same for the upcoming race. |

Class
A
Once again, Lee Thompson (Gallardo IT / Interfile
Golf I) is expected to be the man to beat. The rest
of the Class A field have their work cut out for
them if they want to break his recent dominant form.
His nearest rivals include the likes of Wayne
Masters (Jonnesway / Elite Autobody Golf 4), Ray
Wilford (Fuchs Lubricants Golf II) and George
Economides (Wealth Avenue Golf I). Quentin Thompson
(Thompson’s Volkswagen Golf I) has put in some great
performances of late with Waldie Meintjes (Albatros
Motors Polo) only a few points behind him. |

|
| |
Class B
Kieren Quarmby (Gallardo IT / Interfile Golf I) has
positioned himself as the man to beat in Class B.
Eben Rothman (Freddie’s Autospares / Fram Golf I)
currently leads the points standings in the class
but he will have his work cut out for him if he is
to challenge for the class win. Quinton Needham (Ultravision
/ Thrashcorp Golf I) showed moments of brilliance at
the previous Kyalami race and could be a serious
contender for a podium position. Greg Gosman
(Marty’s Body & Spray Golf I) has upped his game and
has had some very strong results of late and one can
never count out the enthusiasm of Dean Lester
(Lester Properties Golf I). Derek Minnie (Demac Auto
Golf II) has also shown some good pace and if his
luck changes for the better he can definitely be
expected to challenge for a top three result. |

Class
P
Class P has now become the smallest of the four
classes but one can still expect to see some great
racing action between the front runners. Jakes
Jacobs (Brooklyn Panelbeaters Polo) tops the points
table by a mere four points with Ryan Tholet (Prend
Properties Polo Hatch) as his nearest rival. He has
secured a number of pole position and podium results
and could very well beat the defending champion if
he can get his start right. Peet Visagie (Time
Mining Polo Hatch) has adapted to his new car and
currently lies in third position ahead of Clayton Le
Roux (Martin Le Roux Motors / Paintcor Polo). Wouter
Roos (Performance Laboratories Polo) has moved up to
fifth place in the class and is only two points
behind Le Roux. Barry Groenewald (Custom
Technologies Polo) has also put in a few good
results and could very well surprise a few of the
Class P regulars. |

Class C
Class C has shown amazing growth over the last two
races and fielded a ten car entry at the previous
round. Deon van der Watt (Infraset / Truss Pty Ltd
Golf I) has a healthy lead over defending champion
Elna Croeser (Giulio Sabbatini Auto Stylists Golf I)
with Jannie van Rooyen Snr (Goldwagen Roodepoort
Golf I) jumping to third position in the standings
after taking maximum points in his return to
Goldwagen Challenge racing at Kyalami. Giles Darroch
(PMT Civils Golf I) is a solitary point behind the
experienced veteran and showed vast improvement
himself in the previous round with a hard fought
second place as his reward. Newcomers Charl
Smalberger (Sabertek Golf 1) and Elvene Coetzee
(Accolade / Venditor / MFC Golf I) have impressed
their fellow contenders with minimal race experience
and find themselves in fifth and sixth positions in
class.
Overall
Lee Thompson leads the Overall Goldwagen Challenge
Championship by twenty points with Jacobs currently
in second position. Rothman and Tholet are tied for
third with Masters a solitary point behind them.
Quarmby has moved up to sixth place to put both
Gallardo IT / Interfile cars in the top six
positions overall.
Our loyal and dedicated sponsors continue to support
this winning formula - Goldwagen, Wynns, SS
Telecoms, Sabertek, Norbrake, Eduardo Construction,
Time Mining, Rapid Motion, Speed & Sound Magazine –
without them and the dedicated Pro Tour team, the
continued success of this premier Road Show would
not be possible. |
