The Altech GT Challenge visited the Phakisa Freeway
on Saturday, with every driver relishing the
challenge of the Goldfields circuit. With both Toby
Venter in the Porsche and Charl Joubert in the Lotus
missing in Class A, it was the Forza Racing squad
which occupied the first few rows of the grid for
race 1 with the wailing F430 and 360 Ferraris. At
the lights Sharl Parsad in the F430 pulled away from
the rest and won comfortably. Behind him though,
there was some terrific racing all down the field,
with Nic Chapman and Jeremy Pougnet locked in combat
throughout the 10 laps, with the former winning the
tussle for second place at the last corner before
the finish. Behind them Andrew Miller in the yellow
360 was involved in a race long dice with Barry Nel
in the Class C Porsche and Gerald Chapman in another
360. Class C was won by Nicky Dicks in the GT3 Cup
Porsche, with pre race championship leader Rod Cole-Edwardes
not finishing due to mechanical problems. Class D
was won again by Charl Arangies in the Porsche 944
turbo, while in Class E Pierre Martins took the
laurels in the Porsche 928 to continue his giant
killing act, by leading the Altech GT Challenge
overall after 4 rounds, given Toby Venter's absence
from this meeting.
Heat 2 for the Altech GT Challenge was again run
with the Shelby Can Ams who led the combined field
away at the lights, leaving the Ferraris and
Porsches to battle away on their own. Heat 1 winner
Parsad was an early retirement, after contact with
one of the Shelbys, and in another surprise, Pieter
Joubert, brother of Charl, driving the yellow Class
B Lotus Elise, slowly worked his way to the front of
the pack to win from Franco Scribante and Nic
Chapman, both driving Ferrari 360's and Christo
Lindeque in the second F430. Chapman's third place
assured him of the overall win until officials
penalised him for passing under yellow. This
promoted a surprised Jeremy Pougnet to his first
overall win for the day. Classes C, D and E had the
same winners as heat 1, with the "fat bully" Pierre
Martins now leading the challenge overall, with Toby
Venter second.
The next round of the Altech GT Challenge takes
place at the Zwartkops Raceway on the 25th of July.
