The 2009 Investchem Formula Ford series is fast turning into a memorable season. The arrival of Wesleigh Orr (Bravo Holdings/Brett Maybery RacingVan Diemen) has given pre-season favourites Nicholas van Weely and Mathew Merton a headache they weren’t expecting.

Merton in the Matsam Supplies Mygale won both races at the opening round in Cape Town, but hasn’t won since. Then van Weely (Magnificent Paints Van Diemen) won the next two races at Zwartkops in April, but since then it has been all about Orr. Van Weely has raised his game and fought him hard and the result was that the last race at Phakisa was a wheel to wheel battle that was by far the best Formula Ford race seen for a long time.

Van Weely holds a narrow five point lead over Merton with Orr, who only joined the series at round two, in third just four points behind Merton.

Pretoria based Werner Scholtz scored a win last year and but hasn’t had a happy time in the Chemical Logistics Mygale so far this season and he is under pressure. Only four points behind him is another young driver to keep an eye on. Fifteen-year-old James Temple in the GWM Mygale, who came straight out of karts at the end of last season and has learnt very quickly.

Determined 20-year-old Dean Hirschowitz (Nightsbridge Mygale) is one of the most dedicated drivers around at the moment. He’s surprised many especially as he doesn’t have the benefit of karting behind him.

The Zetec Challenge class for older cars on a harder compound semi-slick Avon tyre, should be a fight between title hopeful Ian Schofield (Investchem Mygale) and Rick Morris in the Chemical Logistics Mygale). They shared wins at Phakisa last month, but Morris missed a round earlier in the year which has given Schofield the advantage.

Driving the other Chemical Logistics Mygale, Andreas Petrou lies third after a consistent first half of the season but Allen Meyer (Mygale) is only one point behind despite missing Phakisa while Paul Schultz (Knottsberry Foods Mygale) is a further point adrift.

A driver to keep an eye on here is Barry Harrison (Bravo Holdings/Brett Maybery Racing Van Diemen). He’s has had some good results lately in Formula Volkswagen and could produce an upset.

Tony Sack (Sissy Boy Jeans/Mygale) will be hoping for another good haul of points and should have sparring partners Pieter Lotriet (TATA Bloemfontein/Mygale) and Richard Bonneschen (Anglovaal Van Diemen) for company.

Formula Ford fans can expect close racing in each of the races and picking a winner will not be easy.
