Round 5 of the National Pro Tour heads for Zwartkops Raceway on 25 July and no doubt all eyes will be on Altech GT Challenge overall championship fight. With the season just past the half way mark it is do or die time for those chasing the title. Currently there are five hot contestants sitting within 19 points of each other at the sharp end of the table.

Pierre Martins, piloting a Class E Porsche 928S, leads the way but has Porsche 944 Turbo Cup ace Charl Arangies breathing down his neck. Nicky Dicks (Class C Porsche 996 GT3 Cup) goes into the event in third and Dave Fourie and Barry Nel are tied fourth in a Class D Porsche 911RSR and Class C Porsche 944 Turbo Cup respectively. Despite missing the previous Altech GT Challenge event Toby Venter is still in with a shout in his sublime Class A Porsche 993 GT2R. As entries closed both Martins and Nel hadn't entered so it remains to see whether they'll be at Zwartkops to keep the point scoring momentum up.

Venter is on the entry list and is more than likely going to lead the field for the duration of both heats. That said expect a stiff challenge to come from the nimble Class A Lotus Elise of Charl Joubert.

Class B is jam packed and the on track action promises to be fierce. Olivier Dalais (Porsche 917 Replica), Jon Wilson (Porsche 997 GT3 Cup) and Pieter Joubert (Lotus Elise) will be the minority in a sea of Class B Ferraris. Ferrari 360 Challenge cars will be driven by Franco Scribante, Jeremy Pougnet, Nic Chapman and Andrew Miller while Christo Lindeque, Gerald Chapman and Loris Chiappa will be behind the wheel of Ferrari 430 Challenge models. Both Lindeque and Pougnet proved quick last time out at Zwartkops but if Sharl Parsad makes an appearance with his Ferrari 430 Challenge it'll be an even heavier fight. Pougnet heads up the Class B championship with Lindeque and Parsad following.

Peter Wharton-Hood and Nicky Dicks will make use of Class C Porsche GT3 Cup cars to fend of the advances of Peter Bailey's Ford GT40 Replica. Other appealing entries that could well emerge include the Lotus Exige S of Wayne Waldeck and Barry Nel's Porsche. Going to the event Dicks leads Nel by six points.

Class D will be interesting with two Zwartkops built and run Daytona Cobra replicas making an appearance. Jonathan and Mark du Toit will be at the wheel of these hulking monsters and they both know the track like the back of their hand so should be the cat amongst the Porsche pigeons. Overall championship contenders and Class D sparing partners Charl Arangies and Dave Fourie will be up for the brawl.

No Class E drivers have confirmed their but the chances are good Pierre Martins, Ron Harmse (Porsche 911) and Dillon Miller (Porsche 911 RS) will make a showing to gather valuable 'home circuit' points. As has become the norm for Altech GT Challenge a handful of Altech Porsche 924 Challenge competitors will be on track with the GT Challenge brigade, duelling in an all out sprint race. Confirmation so far has come from Mark Harvey, Dave Parratt, John van Wyk, Marius Wait and Johan Grobler. Non entrant Melt Malan heads the 924 Class but Grobler, Wait and Parrat are right there.

ALTECH PORSCHE CLUB 924 CHALLENGE
Twenty odd competitors will take to Zwartkops as round 5 of the Altech Porsche Club 924 series on 25 July. This championship too is going down to the wire with the top five hopefuls separated by less than 10 points.

Robert Scott tops the pack on 127 points, Braam van Niekerk lies on 123 and the Paul Moss 121. Andrew Culbert and Greg Parton are on 117 and 116 points. Zwartkops is a local stomping ground for Altech Porsche club 924 competitors so very few handicap breaking performances are expected.

Previous Zwartkops big point scorers include Parratt, Wait, Scott, Melt Melt Malan and Colin Maine, with all expected at the track it'll take a brave person to call the finishing order.
