PRESS RELEASE: 29 August 2009

 Heavyweight Title Fight

Altech GT Challenge crews head for the historic East London Grand Prix Circuit on Saturday 29 August for round six of the Altech GT Challenge Championship. With only three more rounds left in the title chase and only twenty points separating the top six the championship fight is going to go down to the wire. A good East London result is imperative for those who want to go down in the Altech GT Challenge history book.

Class D Porsche 944 Turbo pilot Charl Arangies goes into the East London meeting at the top of the overall leader board but Pierre Martins in a Class D Porsche 928 is just two points behind. Nicky Dicks has been consistently quick in his Porsche 996 GT3 Cup car and holds third on 118 points ahead of Dave Fourie (Porsche 911) and Rod Cole-Edwardes (Porsche 993 RSR), who both have 107 points in the bag.

Toby Venter lies down in sixth place, having missed one event, but he is on the entry list for East London and his Porsche 993 GT2R is sure to lead the way around the dauntingly fast East London track. Potters Pass is widely regarded as the fastest corner in local motorsport and Venter's Porsche could well be the fastest tin-top car through the legendary corner this year. It will be a sight to behold.

Altech GT Challenge Class B continues to pull in the largest number of entries. Ten cars, consisting of a handful of Ferraris, a few Porsches and a Lotus have entered the class for the day. Sharl Parsad was impressive at Zwartkops and appears to have really got to grips with his Ferrari F430. He leads the Class B fight ahead of fellow 430 mounted Christo Lindeque and Ferrari 360 Challenge pilot Jeremy Pougnet. Pougnet is the man to watch as technical gremlins at Zwartkops are the only reason for him falling off the top step.

The Oliver Dalais Class B Porsche 917 replica shouldn't be ignored on a track like East London. The long straight plays right into the hands of his brutally powerful, light and aerodynamic machine.

Class C regulars Nicky Dicks (Porsche 996 GT3 Cup) and Rod-Cole Edwardes (Porsche 993 RSR) broke out of the specified class times at the previous event so have been promoted to Class B. Whether or not they have the pace to upset the Ferrari dominance will be the biggest question at East London. How successful the pair is in Class B will have a direct spin-off on the overall championship as both a hot contenders for the honours.

The season long front versus rear engine battle continues in Class D with Charl Arangies (Porsche 944 Turbo) and Dave Fourie (Porsche 911) doing duty.

Dave Parratt, Marius Wait and Johan Grobler will get the most track time for the weekend as the trio compete in both the Altech GT Challenge and Altech Porsche Club 924 Challenge.

As is usual practice for the Altech Porsche Club 924 brigade the slowest car will be let loose first with the faster qualifiers chasing at calculated intervals. The last few laps will be chaotic, especially through the tighter complex section. Expect to see the lead swap on numerous occasions and some do-or-die overtaking manoeuvres.

Going to East London Greg Parton holds a ten point gap on Paul Moss, with Robert Scott a further four points adrift. When going to press Scott and Moss had entered but not Parton. If it stays that way the top of the Altech Porsche 924 Club points table will change after East London.

Other regular front runners who have entered include Mark Saunders, Dave Parratt, Marius Wait, Johan Grobler and Andrew Culbert. All have shown podium finishing form this year so the result is a definite unknown.

Disqualifications are common in the Altech Porsche Club 924 series as competitors are not allowed to go faster than a predetermined lap time. This sounds easy enough, but when the 'race face' or 'red mist' ascends there is not always an ease-off button. At this late stage in the season championship contenders can't afford a slip up in concentration.
