PRESS RELEASE:  29 August 2009

  Round 6 - East London 29 August

The Investchem Formula Ford championship makes its annual pilgrimage to South Africa's historic former Grand Prix circuit in East London.

The track still has the same layout as it had for Grand Prix races in the 1960s when MikeSpence took his Lotus to victory in the 1ast GP held on the track in 1966 which was a non-championship race.

The last Grand Prix counting towards the world championship was held on the circuit in 1965 and Jim Clark won for Lotus. He left the new lap record at 1 minute 27.6 seconds. Last year, local hero Robert Wolk won both Formula Ford races and set a Formula Ford lap record at 1 minute 25.816 seconds.

Wolk went on to win the title last season and this year's title favourite is Nicholas van Weely (Magnificent Paints Van Diemen) who finally got the break he wanted at Zwartkops. The result sees him with a handy 11-point lead over Mathew Merton (Matsam Supplies Mygale) who won the opening race of the year and is itching to repeat the performance.

Former SA A1GP team Rookie driver Wesleigh Orr (Bravo Holdings/Brett Maybery Racing Van Diemen) had a disastrous outing at Zwartkops as mechanical gremlins affected both his races at the last round. He's now 30-points behind and knows it will be difficult. "Thereare only three rounds left which means I need all the help I can get." A huge accident in a Formula Volkswagen race at the Pretoria track left him shaken and bruised, but he is determined to win at East London.

Pretoria based Werner Scholtz (Chemical Logistics Mygale) is three points behind Orr, but has 15-year old James Temple in the GWM Mygale only one point behind. Next up is Dean Hirschowitz (Nightsbridge Mygale) who is a further four points adrift.

In the Zetec Challenge class where cars are on a treaded harder compound Avon tyre, Ian Schofield (Investchem Mygale) has a comfortable advantage over Allen Meyer (Mygale)who has Paul Schutlz (Knottsberry Foods Mygale) hot on his heels. Although British aceRick Morris (Chemical LogisticsMygale) could upset all their plans.

Andreas Petrou (Investchem Mygale) and Tony Sack (Sissy Boy Jeans/Mygale) and Barry Harrison (Bravo Holdings/Brett Maybery Racing Mygale) will also be in the hunt for valuable Zetec Challenge points.
