Saturday 29 August
will see the Goldwagen Challenge tin top gladiators

the halfway mark of the season now passed, the
situation at the top of the points table is getting
more interesting. |

Class A
The battle for the Class A title has developed into
a two horse race at this point in the season. Lee
Thompson’s (Gallardo IT / Interfile Golf I) lead
over Wayne Masters (Jonnesway / Elite Autobody Golf
4) has been cut down to eleven points. George
Economides (Wealth Avenue Golf I) is thirty five
points behind Masters with Quentin Thompson
(Thompson’s Volkswagen Golf I) who has moved up to
fourth position, a further eighteen points behind
Economides.
Class A leader – Lee Thompson
Ray Wilford (Fuchs Lubricants Golf II) has dropped
down to fifth position with Waldie Meintjes (Albatros
Motors Polo Hatch) only six points behind him. A
number of other drivers have also put in some strong
performances of late and any one of them could
surprise the usual front runners.
Class B
The Class B title chase has seen Dean Lester (Lester
Properties Golf I) shoot past Eben Rothman
(Freddie’s Autospares / Fram Golf I) to take a
fourteen point lead over the man who has led the
championship up until this point. Greg Gosman
(Marty’s Body & Spray Golf I) is also closing in on
Rothman and is now only four points behind him in
third.
Class B leader – Dean Lester
Quinton Needham (Ultravision / Thrashcorp Golf I)
still holds onto fourth position a further six
points behind Gosman, with VW Challenge veteran
Peter Thompson (Thompson’s Volkswagen Golf II) a
solitary point behind him. Derek Minnie (Demac Auto
Golf II) is the best of the rest and is a further
five points behind his nearest rivals as he holds a
healthy gap over the rest of the Class B field.
Class P
The Class P battle has all but been won with
defending champion Jakes Jacobs (Brooklyn
Panelbeaters Polo Classic) holding a forty two point
lead over Ryan Tholet (Prend Properties Polo Hatch)
with Peet Visagie (Time Mining Polo Hatch) thirteen
points behind him.
Class P leader – Jakes Jacobs
Wouter Roos (Performance Laboratories Polo Classic)
and Clayton Le Roux (Martin Le Roux Motors /
Paintcor Polo Classic) are tied for fourth position,
a mere five points behind Visagie. Barry Groenewald
(Custom Technologies Polo Classic) continues to
soldier along and is now eight points behind the
duelling duo ahead of him.
Class C
The Class C battle has developed into one of the
closest Class championships this year. Deon van der
Watt (Infraset / Truss Pty Ltd Golf II) holds a
narrow five point lead over defending Champion Elna
Croeser (Giulio Sabbatini Auto Stylists Golf I).
Jannie van Rooyen Snr. (Goldwagen Roodepoort)
continues to threaten for the championship title as
well and is now a solitary point behind the “Femme
Fatale”.
Giles Darroch (PMT Civils Golf I) finds himself
thirteen points behind the leading trio but has
already proved that he can be a serious contender
for a podium position. Fifteen year old karter Charl
Smalberger (Sabertek Golf 1) is a further eighteen
points behind Darroch with lady racer Elvene Coetzee
(Accolade / Venditor / MFC Golf I) only four points
behind him.
Class C leader – Deon van der Watt
Overall
With only three races left in the season after the
East London race, the various class titles are still
very much up for grabs. The prestige of being the
Overall Goldwagen Challenge Champion is also very
much in the minds of many a driver.
Class A leader Lee Thompson continues to top the
points table ahead of Wayne Masters, with Class P
leader Jakes Jacobs currently in third position. New
Class B leader Dean Lester has moved up to fourth
overall with George Economides now tied with Kieren
Quarmby’s (Gallardo IT / Interfile Golf I) class B
points tally.
The racing season is far from over and the pace at
East London promises to be a chaotic affair. The
added challenge of the coastal air could see a few
surprise results as well.
Many thanks goes to our loyal and dedicated sponsors
who continue to support this winning formula -
Goldwagen, Wynns, SS Telecoms, Sabertek, Norbrake,
Eduardo Construction, Time Mining, Rapid Motion, and
Speed & Sound Magazine – without them and the
dedicated Pro Tour team, the continued success of
this premier Road Show would not be possible. |
