Toby Venter dominates
Altech GT Challenge in East London, but Arangies
still leads overall
|
| |
As expected, Toby Venter ran away
with both the Altech GT Challenge race wins in East
London, in the awesomely fast Class A Porsche GT2R,
but behind him, a lot of drama and some good racing
kept a large crowd entertained on a cold and
blustery day.
Oscar de Oliveira dominated qualifying and both
Class B races in the older Ferrari F360. However in
race two, in which the exotics battled it out with
the Shelby Can Ams, his charge was brought to a
premature end when he and outgoing Shelby champion
Rui Campos made contact and crashed out at the
exit of the complex on lap 8 of the scheduled 14.
Jeremy Pougnet then went on to take the win in his
F430. Sharl Parsad was next up in a similar machine,
and the two are now locked in a tight battle for the
Class B title. Behind them, father and son team of
Gerald and Nic Chapman also put in two solid
performances. Other class regulars, Silvio Scribante
and Christo Lindeque did not make the trip to the

Rod Cole Edwardes in the Porsche 993RSR was on his
own and therefore unchallenged in Class C after
Nicky Dicks in the Porsche GT3 Cup had to contest
the day's races in Class B following a better than
specified class time at the last round at Zwartkops.
Barry Nel blew the engine on his Class D 944 in
practice and went home early, and it was Charl
Arangies in another 944 Porsche Turbo who again took
the overall honours, after two race long fights with
the other class stalwart Dave Fourie. Pierre Martins
finished behind the pair both times and is now
slipping back in the championship log. Arangies's
wins however will have done his overall title
aspirations no harm.
Pieter Joubert in the Lotus Elise and Oliver Dalais
in the Porsche 917 replica were two notable
absentees from proceedings, following problems in
qualifying. |

In
the Altech Porsche Club 924 Challenge Johan
Grobler took two wins and the maximun 50 points,
ahead of Paul Moss and Andrew Gilbert. Championship
leader Greg Parton was a non starter, also after
problems in qualifying so he now trails Moss in the
championship.
The
action now moves back to Zwartkops on the 10th of
October for the penultimate round of this year's
Altech GT Challenge. |
