PRESS RELEASE:   March 2010

Pro Tour to visit Zwartkops

The Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria will host round two of the 2010 Pro Tour Motor Racing Road Show next Saturday (March 20), with all six of its participating racing disciplines in action.

  * Top billing on the programme will belong to the Shelby CanAm category,
with more than a dozen of the 3,5-litre V6 engined sports cars taking to the
tarmac. Reigning South African champion Darryn Lobb (NJOY Shelby) leads the title chase after the first two races, but that does not make him an automatic victory favourite at Zwartkops. Youngsters Guy Botterill (Bigfoot/ Express/Yato Tools Shelby) and Andrew Strike (Strike 1 Shelby), plus veterans Rui Campos (Hugo Boss Shelby) and Sean Greve (Vulcania Reinforcing Shelby) could all challenge for race wins.
Others who could surprise - especially during the day's second race, which
will start from an inverted grid - will include Brian Algar (Etana Insurance Shelby), Thomas Reib (J
ägermeister Shelby), Alan Eve (Phakisa Raceway
Shelby) Pierre Martins (GT1 Racing Workshop) and Trevor Bland (GT 1 Racing Workshop)

  * The Midas Formula Ford category will bring its all new Duratec engined
cars to Zwartkops for the first time. The 2,4 kilometre circuit's tight and tricky nature always ensures close single seater action, and Saturday's events should be no exception. Matthew Merton (Matsam Mygale) quickly sorted out his new car and won the year's opening two races, but the rest of the pack will be on his heels. His toughest challengers should include defending South African champion Nicholas van Weely (Anglo Rand Mygale), current Formula VW champion Jayde Kruger (Motul/First Freight Mygale) and multiple former Formula Ford title holder Robert Wolk (Midas Sport Mygale). Given reliability, Steve Morris (Van Diemen) and Werner Scholtz (Investchem Mygale) could also vie for podium places.

  * The day's two Altech GT races will most likely again see easy overall victories for Toby Venter in his works Class A Porsche GT2R), with his only challenger Vernon Bricknell in a similar car unlikely to compete after being T boned in East London. Class B will be a more lively affair, the Metal Used Spares Ferrari F430 of Jeremy Pougnet, plus the F360 models of Franco Scribante and Nic Chapman, will lock horns with Pieter Joubert (Lotus Exige), Sun Moodley (Bigfoot Express Porsche GT3), Mike Wilson (Fine Metals Porsche GT3) and Rod Cole-Edwardes (Porsche 993 RSR). Porsche drivers Nicky Dicks (Curvent GT3 Cup), Barry Nel (B-Tech 944 Turbo) and Simon Murray (996 GT3 Cup) should be the people to beat in Class C, versus the lone Gofa Properties Ferrari 360 of Jonathan Shenkman.

  * Expect to see the leading positions in the Red Square Kawasaki ZX10 Masters Cup being contested by Gavin Lightfoot (Kawasaki SA ZX10), Pieter de Vos (Jonnesway ZX10), Gavin Ramsay (Mailwise International ZX10), Brian Moldenhauer (Powermax ZX10), Joe Shearer (O'Mage ZX10), Pierre le Roux (Buffalo Motorcycles ZX10) and Piet Potgieter (Xerox ZX10).

  * The handicap based Porsche 924 races should provide much spectacle over
the final laps, with quicker cars forced to scythe their way through a packed field at Zwartkops, where passing is generally a fraught endeavor.
Top runners should be Mark Harvey(Adapt Communication), Greg Parton(Drizit Environmental), Martin Liebenberg (2M Sportrailers), Harry
Arangies (Vaal Fluid Systems) and Melt Malan(Kilimani Developments).

  * The Goldwagen Challenge races should boast the day's biggest entry, with
more than 45 cars expected on the grid. Waldie Meintjes (Albatros Polo) currently leads the overall title chase with his closest Class A competitors Eddie Rodrigues (SEW Eurodrive Polo), Gerhard Henning (Amptech Golf 2) and Derick Smalberger (Sabertech Polo). Meanwhile Peter Thompson (Thompsons Golf), Charl Smalberger (Remconix Golf) and Wouter Roos (Performance Laboratories Polo) are the points leaders in Classes B, C and P, respectively.
