The Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria hosted round two
of the 2010 Pro Tour, with a full day of action
entertaining an enthusiastic crowd on Saturday
(March 20).
Pole sitter Guy Botterill led the opening Shelby
CanAm for a lap, but then pitted his Yato Tools
Shelby with suspension damage. Meanwhile Greg Walker
spun his Indy Oil Shelby in the circuit’s fastest
sweep, to bring out a Safety Car.At the restart
Darryn Lobb took the lead in his NJOY Shelby and he
stayed there to win. He was followed over the finish
line by Thomas Reib (Jagermeister Shelby), Alan Eve
(Phakisa Shelby), Brian Algar (Etana Insurance
Shelby) and Rui Campos (Hugo Boss Shelby).
Race two started from its inverted grid in dramatic
fashion, when Brian Algar and Thomas Reib tangled
and crashed out on the first lap.Others in the wars
were early leader Andrew Strike, who spun his Strike
1 Shelby twice and Rui Campos, who went off in the
pit corner twice. Despite losing his car’s nosecone
in the action, guest driver Jaki Scheckter (Pablo
Clark Shelby) grabbed the lead and he hung on to
win. Scheckter led home Alan Eve, Darryn Lobb,
Bertil Hoffman (GP Energy Drink Shelby), Sean Greve
(Vulcania Reinforcing Shelby) and a recovered Rui
Campos.
Multiple single seater champion Jayde Kruger took
his First Freight Mygale to a lights to flag victory
in the opening Midas Formula Ford race.Behind him
Wesleigh Orr (Brett Mayberry Van Diemen) and Mathew
Merton (Matsam Supplies Mygale) fought tooth and
nail for the runner-up spot until they came together
on the final lap, leading to Orr’s retirement.
Robert Wolk (Midas Mygale) came from the back of the
field to finish second, leading home Werner Scholtz
(Investchem Mygale), a recovered Merton, Nicholas
van Weely (Anglo Rand Van Diemen) and Steven Morris
(Van Diemen). Kruger retired his Mygale with
electronic maladies in race two, leaving Westleigh
Orr to take a comfortable victory. Others had
problems, too – Mathew Merton was penalized 30
seconds for a jump start, Steven Morris’ car broke a
sideshaft and Nicholas van Weely outbraked himself
into the Sweep. Robert Wolk again scythed
through the field to take second place, ahead of
Werner Scholtz (Investchem Mygale) and Mathew
Merton. Veteran Rick Morris (Investchem Mygale) won
the Zetec class both times, with Ian Schofield (Investchem
Mygale) and Allen Meyer (Lesdonnees Mygale) taking
turns in the runner-up spot.
Charl Joubert (A1 Bakkie Spares Lotus Exige) led the
first Altech GT Challenge race briefly, but his car
expired on the second lap, leaving Toby Venter to
take an unchallenged overall win in his works
Porsche GT2R.
Pieter Joubert (City Used Spares Lotus Exige)
narrowly beat Rod Cole-Edwardes (Radical Porsche 993
RSR) to the Class B victory, ahead of Franco
Scribante (Remo’s Ferrari 430 Challenge) and Mike
Wilson (Fine Metals Porsche GT3 Cup). Meanwhile
Simon Murray (Porsche GT3) won Class C from Markus
Minihold (Auto Cure Porsche RSR) and Barry Nel
(B-Tech Porsche 944). Venter produced a carbon copy
win the next time out, with Charl Joubert’s Lotus
this time lasting the duration in second place.
Class B’s results were the same as those of race
one, with Pieter Joubert finishing ahead of Cole-Edwardes,
Scribante and Wilson. Jonathan Shenkman (OCC Ferrari
360) won Class C from Simon Murray and Markus
Minihold.
Gavin Lightfoot (Kawasaki SA ZX10) won the opening
Red Square Kawasaki Masters Cup race, beating Jannie
Stander (Insane Racing ZX10) and Bradley Stark
(Stark Products ZX10) to the chequered flag. Stark
won the second time around, narrowly ahead of
Lightfoot and Stander.
George Economides (Wealth Avenue Golf) won Class A
of the opening Goldwagen Challenge race.
The victories in Classes P, B and C went to Jakes
Jacobs (Goldwagen Roodepoort Polo), Jannie van
Rooyen (Goldwagen Roodepoort Golf) and Charl
Smalberger (Remconix Golf) respectively. The results
of the second race were provisional, pending the
outcome of various hearings.
The next round of the 2010 Pro Tour will take place
at Killarney in the Western Cape on Saturday, April
