Formula
Ford has heritage, and lots of it. It
started forty years ago when a new Ford
powered low cost single seater series was
introduced in England. Lotus supplied the
first chassis and in July 1967 the first
ever Formula Ford race took place at Brands
Hatch. |

With rules
stipulating a maximum car cost of 1000
pounds, growth of the series was phenomenal
and there were over ten chassis
manufacturers by the end of the season and
the category soon began to spread around the
world although the upper price limit quickly
fell by the wayside. It has often been said
that Formula Ford was responsible for over
20 successful race car manufacturers coming
into business. |

The first
Formula Fords arrived in South Africa in
1968 and raced with Formula Vee until there
were enough of them to race in their own
race. By 1971 there was a fully fledged
national championship recognised by what is
now known as Motorsport South Africa. |
