Page 2 - Welcome

Welcome to Round 3 of the 2008 Pro Tour Racing Series at Kyalami.

The Pro Tour management team extends a warm welcome to all race fans, officials, competitors and sponsors at this Blockbuster event.

Having grown in stature with each event that has taken place over the past year, the Pro Tour again has jam packed grids for today’s races. Every championship is wide open and the competitors are all eagerly lining up every opportunity to stake an early claim to the championship titles.

This Citizen Pro Tour Race Day is set to provide unprecedented action as National, National Challenge, Regional and Club championships are hotly contested by a Blockbuster field of over 220 competitors. A special welcome to our guest category competitors from Lotus Challenge and the Sports Racing Association.

In a relaxed but competitive atmosphere of fun and excitement, Pro Tour has solidly entrenched the principles of recognition, equality, co-operation, good sportsmanship, even handedness, fair compromise and solution finding. This has resulted in the 2008 season already yielding many highlights, with unbelievably good racing and unprecedented dedication to “making things work”, from both officials and competitors alike.
Our highly rated, comprehensive and hugely popular website www.pro-tour.co.za features some of the best photographic galleries of motorsport related images available and must be visited.

The resounding success of Pro Tour in 2007 led to expanding the reach of the tour to include events hosted in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth thus totaling 10 rounds in the 2008 Pro Tour. The next Pro Tour event takes place at Killarney on the 10th of May and Pro Tour then returns inland to Zwartkops raceway west of Pretoria on the 21st of June. Please be sure to diarise these dates and join us for an action packed day’s racing.

The Pro Tour management and officials wish all of our drivers and riders a successful and competitive race day and a speedy recovery to a few of our competitors who are recovering from a a variety of injuries (including financial) picked up whilst providing the action for our audiences.

Our sincere thanks are extended to The Citizen for sponsoring today’s event, to the category sponsors of Execuline Shelby Can Am, Invest Chem Formula Ford, Altech Porsche Challenge, Goldwagen Challenge, Altech Kawasaki ZX10 Masters Cup, Formula Vee’s own generous sponsoring members of their series, Geyser Attorneys, Rigidek, Lasersprint, Office Direct and BJ Pro Welding.

Pro Tour Management Team ~ Neil Lobb, Lindsay Steyn, Allen Meyer, Ken Rolfe, Francois Pretorius, Trevor Elske, Louis van Bergen, Jannie Geyser, Kevin Jenkins, Waldie Meintjes, Andre ten Napel, Sena Liguori, Andrew Eva and Jimi Smith.

After two rounds of the Execuline Shelby Can-Am championship, the championship is wide open and sitting on top of the points log is Alan Eve (Hugo Boss), one of South Africa’s most experienced drivers. With almost 20 years of competitive national championship racing behind him he knows it won't be an easy task staying ahead of the pack.

"So far it's the more experienced drivers who have been most consistent and this has given us the edge," said Eve. "But there're a lot of youngsters arriving, so it could get interesting."

Only five points adrift are 'old foxes' Brian Algar (Firedart) and Dave Beattie (DURA) but after a long overdue win in the last round in Port Elizabeth the youthful Chris Hart (Hi-Q Plettenberg Bay) is matching them on 57 points.

1 Alan Eve 62 points
2 Brian Algar 57 points
2 Dave Beattie 57 points
2 Chris Hart 57 points
3 Rui Campos 46 points
3 Thomas Reib 46 points

Lurking on 46 points are Rui Campos (Hugo Boss) and impressive newcomer Thomas Reib (Intertrans). Campos also had a win in PE. Kyalami double winner and reigning champion Darryn Lobb has now joined the Production Car ranks, but his car (now owned by Sam Racing) will be on the grid, with the driver still to be confirmed. Durban newcomer Bryant van der Merwe (Chemspec) has shown great race craft and also has 42 points to his credit.

Sean Greve (Vulcania Reinforcing) is on 41 points and has lady racer Jennifer Murray (Execuline) a solitary point behind. Another Durban driver, Guy Botterill (Fragram Tools) joined the series in PE and immediately caused a stir with his pace as he matched the leaders and he is also on 40 points. Craig Shorter (Execuline) has put in some good performances and could upset the plans of others.

Shelby Can-Am stalwarts Colin Frost (Strocam) has more pace than his results have shown this year and Richard Wood is also eager to get a good result after a bad start to the season. Newcomers Sun Moodley (Bigfoot Express) and Hanno Pengilly are looking forward to improving their times they are now getting used to.

All eyes will be on Cape Town based former Dutch Touring Car racer Bertil Hoffman (IOU Music) who makes his debut and his progress will be watched carefully.

Execuline Shelby Can-Am Racing is supported by additional sponsors Hollard, Spanjaard, Carrera Eye Wear, British International and Goodyear.

Formula Vee Title Battle Returns to Kyalami

The battle for the 2008 South African National Formula Vee Championship, returns to Kyalami on the 12th April 2008. The event will be the third round, of the exciting 2008 Pro Tour Series, with National Championship events, for Execuline Shelby Can Am, Investec Formula Ford Zetec, and Formula Vee, Regional Championship events, for Altech Porsche Cup Unlimited, Goldwagen Volkswagen Challenge and Lotus Challenge and Club Championship events, for Altech Kawasaki Masters, Altech Porsche 924 and the Sports Racing Association who will run a mini Enduro event, at the end of the day. With a dynamic mix, of Sports Racing Cars, Single Seaters, Saloon Cars, Motor Cycles and Exotic Cars, the day’s racing caters for a wide variety of interests, while the Porsche 924s run as a Handicap event and the second heats of the Execuline Shelby Can Am and Altech Porsche Cup Unlimited categories, will once again be combined, adding further interest and variety to the event. Certainly a day, not to be missed.

The first race of the year, saw two of the top Formula Vee contenders, for the 2008 National Title, come out of the event almost neck and neck but at the Port Elizabeth event, it was the reigning Champion, Alan Holm (No1 Laser Sprint Rhema 2) who once again established himself as the man to beat. Eager to regain lost ground, will be Peter Hills (No3 Rigidek MLS Brokers Rhema 2), with Dennis Johns (No2 Geyser Attorneys Rhema 2), seemingly picking up momentum, as the season progresses. Not quite there but hoping to get back in the hunt, will be another of the ex Champions, Symm Grobler (No4 Auto Mecca Rhema 2), while Holm’s team mate Jaco Schriks (No5 Laser Sprint Rhema 2), could also become a serious contender, if he can keep up his PE race form. For all of them, the opportunity to make a serious dent,in Holm’s quest for a fourth consecutive title, is boosted by the fact that Holm will not be in the Kyalami race. The event clashes with the South African Iron Man Competition and Holm will be in action, in Port Elizabeth, substituting horsepower for mussel power and pedal power.

Page 9 - Formula Vee

Not far behind and ready to pick up the pieces, will be the likes of Trevor Bland (No6 Office Direct Rhema 2), development drivers, Courtney Steenveld (No8 Indy Oil Rhema 2) and Zaahir Essa (No71 NLDTF Rhema 1), along with Johan Gouws (No27 Computer Assembly Mantis) Gareth Jackson (No15 Laser Sprint Rhema 2) and James Leach No11 Autofair Rhema 1. After writing off his car, in PE, it is doubtful that Ben Pienaar (No101 BJ Pro Welding Rhema) will be on the grid, at Kyalami, while Association Chairman Jannie Geyser Snr and his helpers, are in a race against time, to put the No7 Geyser Attorneys Vision back together, after an extensive rebuild.

Jannie Geyser Jnr (No63 Geyser Attorneys Rhema2), will however be in the field, along with newcomer Alan Eustice (No77 Execuline Rhema2), the other newcomers, Nicholas Tennant (No34 Tennant Benefit Consultants Tasman), Chandre Kruger (No41 Gilus IT SAP Sting) and Andre Overbeek (No78 Omega), along with old stalwarts Doug MacDonald (No18 Fantastic Racing Rhema 1), Nico Blignaut (No23 Gilus IT SAP Rhema 2) and Andre Van Der Merwe (No51 Atlas Dry Cleaners Lantis).

Page 17 - Kawasaki ZX10 Masters Cup

All Set for a Master Blaster Return to Kyalami

The Altech Kawasaki ZX10 Masters Cup is all set for a heated return to kyalami with a field of close to 40 riders expected. The class was a revelation last season serving up fast and furious action belying the senior status of the pilots taking part with lap times consistently improving with the top contenders posting close to National Championship times. And this on bog standard machines all with the same Bridgestone rubber for 2008. The series has moved from Club status in 2007 to a National Challenge for 2008 and with possible National Championship status for 2009 all of the contenders have upped their games serving up plenty of action in the first two meetings of the 2008 season.

This season has also seen the arrival of several new contenders and with some of the top pilots having misfortune at the first Kyalami meeting and after two spectacular crashes at Aldo Scribante in the second meeting the leader board has a rather unfamiliar look about it.

Champion Greg Dreyer finds himself in the unfamiliar position of 4th in the standings after a disqualification in the first heat at Kyalami for passing a safety car and having to start at the back of the grid for heat 2. His misfortune continued at Aldo Scribante when he and Championship rival Gavin Lightfoot had a coming together resulting in another DNF. This will only serve to make the former National Champion more determined to put matters right with a brace of wins.

With Gavin Lightfoot out of action for the next two meetings with a broken arm it will be left to another former National Champion in Gavin Ramsay to challenge Dreyer, Ramsay capitalized on the confusion at Kyalami the last time out and came away with two wins giving him a perfect start to the season, his luck did however run out at Aldo Scribante when he and Adan Du Plessis met at the Toyota hairpin resulting in both riders crashing out.

Click for large image

18.jpg

Page 18 - Kawasaki ZX10 Masters Cup

Championship leader Jayson Lamb has been a revelation this season with an overall win at Aldo and the East London rider will be looking to continue his good form at Kyalami.

Another rider who will be challenging for top honours will be Cape Town rider Danie Maritz. He had a guest appearance in the first Kyalami meeting on the Wicked Wayne Racing machine and returns as a fully fledged competitor for the rest of the season. Other riders who will be looking at podium finishes will be Pieter De Vos who has improved since the beginning of the series as well as Adan Du Plessis who finished 3rd in the series last season. He had two DNFs at Aldo Scribante as a result of his altercation with Gavin Ramsay and will be looking to get as many points as possible.

Amongst the top 10 Class A pilots should be Joe Shearer, Richard Carmody, Duanne Armstrong and if he can stay on his machine the ‘’DOG DOCTOR’’ Stew Christie.
Further down the field in Class A will see a number of other skirmishes with Polish rider Marek Pietkun in only his second meeting set to continue his battle with Sid Farinha also taking part in his second meeting, Both will be hoping to add to the points scored on their maiden outings at Aldo Scribante.

The elder statesmen in Class B will be no less determined in their quest for points and glory with Champion and Championship leader Armand Claasens looking to be in a class of his own and able to run at the front of the field with the Class A boys. He will be looking to continue with his perfect score of 4 out of 4 wins and make it 6 out 6.

With Series founder Louis Van Bergen out for the rest of season it appears as if the challenge will come from Nigel racer Sarel Marais who has been fast in the first two meetings of the season and has been putting in the saddle time and is improving at every outing.

Newcomers to the series Dewald Winterbach and Gilbert Parsons are both seasoned campaigners at both Regional and National level and will be challenging for podium places. Winterbach crashed out in the first heat at the previous Kyalami meeting resulting in him missing Aldo Scribante and being pointless for the season so far. He does however have the pace to run at the front of the field and will be looking to put matters right.

Other contenders will be Piet Potgieter and Trevor Elske who finished 3rd and 4th in the series in 2007 respectively and will be looking to consolidate their challenges for the sought after top five places. Both have had consistent rides in the first two outings and will be out to lift their games.

Other names to look out for include another East Londoner Pierre Le Roux who put in a top class performance at Aldo Scribante and he will be hoping to get a good result at Kyalami. Not out of the picture are Claus Hachman who has been improving steadily as well as Franceua Nell and Wicked Wayne Deintjie.

Also look out for todays guest rider. This is lady racer Wilmarie Janse Van Rensburg who will be on the Speed Queen Racing machine. She might just give a couple of the hardened guys a run for their money as she is an experienced racer having raced in practically every class including 250cc, 600cc, BOTTS and having raced in Europe in Endurance events.

All of which adds up to one thing. Another day of fast and furious two wheeled action with no quarter given or asked.

Saturday 12 April will once again see the Goldwagen VW Challenge army head to Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Midrand for round three of this year’s Pro Tour Series.

The championship is still wide open with various drivers throughout the classes all aiming to get top position. With four classes racing on the day and a field of close to fifty entries expected race fans are guaranteed to see plenty of great racing action.

Wayne Masters (Jonnesway Golf) currently leads the class A championship with Jason Finney (Gallardo IT Golf) and Ray Wilford (Fuchs Polo) rounding out the top three. Quentin Thompson (Thompson’s Motors Golf) has also had a great start to the year and currently lies in fourth place ahead of Jurgen Pillhofer (Eternity Jewellers Polo Playa), with defending champion George Economides (Menlyn Gearbox Golf) in sixth after he missed the season opener earlier in the year. He is always a tough competitor and is expected to challenge for the win. One should also not forget the likes of Gavin Ross (Norbrake Golf) and Waldie Meintjes (Albatros Motors Polo).

The class B battle looks set to be a hum dinger once again this season with the top four being separated by only four points! A mix of youth and experience is sure to provide more close racing. Carlos Nobre (Golf) currently leads the point’s standings with Kieren Quarmby (Gallardo IT Golf) only three points behind. Chad Bartrum (Corporate Office Concepts Golf) and Gerhard Henning (Robbie’s Auto Golf) are tied for third, only one point behind Quarmby. A host of other talented drivers are more than capable of running at the front – these include the likes of Peter Thompson (Thompson’s Motors Golf), Quinton Needham (Sasol Autobody Repairs Golf), Ian Prinsloo (Venditor Konica Minolta Golf) and Stuart Mack (Mega-Magic Golf).

Class C also has a mix of youth and experience along with a feminine touch. George Bath (Golf) still leads the points table while defending champion Mark Gregory (Creative Patterns Golf) sees himself in a three way tie for second place with lady racer Elna Croeser (Golf) and schoolboy Giles Darroch (Golf) nipping at his heels. Badresh Lalla (Venditor Konica Minolta Golf) has improved with every outing and could also surprise a few of his opponents on the day.

Class P was hotly contested throughout the 2007 season and if the racing in 2008 is anything to go by this trend is set to continue throughout the year. Jakes Jacobs (Polo) leads the class by a solitary point ahead of Derick Smalberger (Sabertek). Ryan Tholet (Prend Properties) surprised everyone with his performance at the last race in Port Elizabeth and two solid results see him in third place ahead of Clayton Le Roux (Martin Le Roux Motors). Barry Groenewald (Custom Technologies) seems to be coming to grips with his new car and could also be a threat for the podium if all goes well for him. Other leading contenders in the class include Jonathan Roborg-Sondergaard (Excelsior Panelbeaters), Andre Ten Napel (SS Telecoms) and newcomer Nico Smit (Bateman Engineering).

Page 25 - Altech Porsche Challenge

After a lengthy lay off, the Altech Porsche Challenge competitors resume battle in the Pro Tour on the 12th April 2008 at the famous and much loved Kyalami race circuit.

The series skipped the trip down to the Aldo Scribante circuit in Port Elizabeth and a lot of background action has taken place with a number of cars completing preparation that had not been ready for the season opener on the 26th January. The teams and drivers who took part in January’s race meeting have the edge in terms of points, but so early in the season nothing is a given when it comes to overall results and honours.

At the front end of the Altech Porsche Challenge Unlimited Series, Toby Venter in his 911 GT2R will be looking to stay ahead of Franz Pretorius in his Le Mans winning 956. This pairing provides the spectators with some blisteringly fast laps from their top of the performance range cars.

In Class B, the Ferrari’s make their first appearance of 2008 and five cars will be doing battle for the honours with the Porsches of Lindsay Robertson, Markus Minihold and Peter Wharton-Hood to name a few.

Battles in the midfield will once again be where the ultra competitive racing takes place in the series, with a mix of model ranges and car marques doing similar lap times and simultaneously aiming to break the magical 2 minute barrier around this fast and technically unforgiving race track.

At the front expect to see Rolf Schlub (964 RS) and John Greve racing his RSR. Driving Porsche 944 Turbo Cup cars are Barry Nel and Charl Arangies. Ashley Lobb, son of former Shelby Can-Am champion Neil Lobb will be giving the brutal V8 powered TVR Chimaera another run on the Pro Tour.

Click for large image

26.jpg

Page 26 Altech Porsche Challenge

Running to a tried and tested handicap system where the fastest cars start last, a full field of Porsche 924s will be out in force for the Altech Porsche 924 Challenge events.

The 924 was the Porsche for the masses and features a front mounted 2-litre motor driving through a rear mounted transaxle unit. The ideal weight distribution of the 924 gave it the reputation of being the best handling production car and even today there’s very little that will stay with a bog standard 924 over a twisty road.

The cars racing have been modified to various levels and the idea is to get the handicap starting times perfect so at the end of the race all cars cross the line together which provides door rubbing racing. This series guarantees lots of passing action as a field of 25 plus cars all converge on the finishing line in the last 2 laps where the faster cars are trying to make their way through the slightly slower cars which started ahead of them in the fight for finishing position.

Current series champion Piet Nortje had a nightmare of a start to his 2008 season and has pledged his total onslaught to ensuring that his reign continues. The Rookies in the 2008 season will also be keen to get back on to the track to prove why they joined the series and possibly upset the odd seasoned campaigner in the process.

The Altech Porsche Challenge Unlimited series second race of the day is run combined with the Execuline Shelby Can-Am’s. This race provides devastating action and kamikaze passing as the battle for position between superior power and superior handling plays itself out through a field of 50 high performance cars in a race which is 50 percent longer than the usual sprint race and is still not long enough, not to want it to never end.

Witness the huge smiles of the drivers at the end of the race and you will know that this is the ultimate race to watch and to compete in – Do not miss it for anything!!

On behalf of Altech and the Porsche Challenge we wish all spectators a happy days viewing.

Page 29 - Investchem Formula Ford

There's a renewed interest in single seater racing in South Africa and predicting a title favourite, let alone a race winner in this season's Investchem Formula Ford Championship is an almost impossible task.

With two events in the 10 round series gone, Nicholas van Weely has stood out. The Linden youngster has had a remarkably consistent start in the Magnificent Paints Van Diemen and

If it hadn't been for a mysterious electrical problem at the last round he'd have a 100% win record. He's not always the fastest driver, but he always qualifies well, gets a good start and drives a superb opening lap which sees a squabbling pack floundering in his wake.

Werner Scholtz (L Scholtz Civils Van Diemen) is the only other winner so far and his cool, calm and collected drive in PE where he resisted huge pressure from Zimbabwean Gerard Peters (Petro-Oil Zim Mygale) will be remembered for a long time.

Van Weely goes to Kyalami with a four point advantage over Peters while Bloemfontein's Pieter Norval (Investchem Mygale) lies third and is quite capable of winning a race. Thanks to his PE win, Scholtz lies fourth in the points table.

Click for large image

30.jpg

Page 30 - Investchem Formula Ford

Francois vd Merwe is fifth, but won't be racing and the other hopeful is Mathew Merton in the Matsam Mygale. He's had a terrible start to his year but is another driver who is capable of taking the chequered flag.

A driver to watch out for is Andrew Horne from Parkview. He's served a brief apprenticeship in the Kent Classic series where his self prepared Royale runs with the established stars and he makes his debut in the quicker Zetec powered class at the wheel of the Bravo Holdings/Volare Mygale vacated by vd Merwe.

A championship within a championship is the Zetec Challenge, for cars on harder compound tyres. Here British Formula Ford legend Rick Morris (Investchem Mygale) has a slender advantage over Allen Meyer (Les Données Mygale). The pair had a terrific scrap in PE but it ended in tears which allowed Andreas Petrou (Chemical Logistics Mygale) through to snatch a last gasp win.

Championship Standings (after 2 rounds)
